The Specialized Independent Living Program (SIL) provides care to youth who have been released from alternative-to-secure or secure placement and are in need of independent living skills while receiving minimal supervision.
SIL is a four-tier community-based program that provides staff supervision 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each level is progressive – as the resident moves upward, he/she is expected to demonstrate more responsibility and accountability, and is expected to demonstrate life skills in real-life situations, such as community-based employment and education. In return, he/she is able to earn progressively more time in the community.
Independent living classes include instruction in cooking and cleaning, obtaining employment and securing housing. Youth are also required to have bank accounts and learn the importance of budgeting and saving money. Youth must accrue a balance of at least $2,000 in order to fulfill the requirements of the program and be discharged.
Youth in the SIL Program may attend one of the local public high schools, colleges or trade schools. They also have the opportunity to earn their GED, if desired. Youth participate in the SIL Program for an average of 4-6 months.
